Understanding Sell Through Rates to Make More Money on eBay

    Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

If you want to make money consistently on eBay, understanding the concept of sell through rates (STRs) and their importance in crucial to your business success.

Simply put, your STR is the percentage of listings that end successfully over a specified time.  First let’s define successfully.  By that I mean an auction that ends with a sale at a price where you make a profit.  Next we have to consider the time factor.  Some sellers measure their STR over a one-week period while others prefer to look at a month.  The longer the period the more accurate your data will be as anyone can have a bad week. For instant if you measured sales during Superbowl week you may have a low STR and think your product just wasn’t selling well.

Now that we know what STR is, why is it important?  First of all it is a measure of the sales potential of a product on eBay. If I am considering selling a new product, I will look at the STR of the product by other sellers before I decide to purchase a quantity to sell on eBay.  If the STR of that product by other sellers is low, that is a red flag and I will do a lot more research before deciding if I want to sell that product.  This is really one of the secrets of making money on eBay.  You see, your research may tell you to totally avoid the product –thereby saving you some money or it may show that other sellers are not selling the product correctly and thereby creating an opportunity.

The other reason to watch STRs has to do with fee control.  If you listed ten identical items on eBay you would pay ten separate listing fees. Now if your sell through rate was only 50% (5 items sold) that means that you paid listing fees on the other 5 items that didn’t sell.  Therefore your listing fee on the ones that did sell is effectively doubled.  If only 3 items sold, your listing fees just went up 70%.

If you think about this you will see that a low STR can really affect your profit margin.  This has more impact on low priced items where the sliding scale of eBay listing fees represents a higher portion of an items starting price for lower cost goods. (Click here to see eBay listing fees if you don’t understand this).

If you are selling expensive goods, say over $200, then your STR can be lower than if you are selling something for $20 because the fees (both listing and final value) are a lower percentage of the price.  So the key to making money on eBay is to first understand the sell through rate for all of your products, fully understand your fees and do the calculations to make sure you are making a profit.

In general if I am researching a product to sell on eBay, I look for products that have a sell through rate of over 50%.  That is not a hard and fast rule, but if you start there you will really reduce your risk.

Gift and Merchandise Shows Are a Boon to eBay Niche Marketers

    Monday, January 29th, 2007

In my last post I reported that we were going to the Seattle Gift Show and promised to report what we found.

The Seattle gift show continues to grow and was larger than ever –taking up almost all of the huge Washington State Convention Center.  There were over 800 companies exhibiting –all wholesale vendors looking for resellers.

You may be turned off by the term gift, but don’t be. Gift in this context is a very generic term.  A gift show is actually a small merchandise show.  There were sellers of everything from clothing to jewelry, housewares to garden tools and decor, pet items, toys and games, collectibles, all manner of kitchen items including gourmet specialty food suppliers and everything in between.

A show like this is niche market heaven for an eBay seller.  There were literally niches within niches that you could explore.  If you are really serious about building an eBay business and finding products to sell on eBay, then you will want to get registered and attend a wholesale gift show.

We came home with two bags full of wholesale catalogs and price lists.  Most importantly I only ran into one supplier who would not agree to letting us sell online.  We found a line of very unique garden fountains from a small manufacturer who will drop ship for us. I found another line of expensive ($100 to $300) framed art prints, who after discussions, offered us the exclusive rights to his product on eBay if we could guarantee a minimum monthly volume –and he also agreed to drop ship for us.

We saw tons of new products –some that interested us and many that didn’t, but it did give us an idea of what the hot product areas will be in the coming year.

Two areas that we noticed were very busy were upscale pet products, pet transporters, pet jewelry and clothing and even pet spa products.  The other area was spa, bath and skin care products.  There were probably double the number of usual suppliers and their booths were very busy.

Garden art, tools and decor was another hot area.  It seems that all the baby boomers are at the point where their kids have finally left home and they are turning to gardening and outdoor entertaining.

January through March is wholesale trade show season, so look for a trade show coming to your area and find the hot products that will let you make money on eBay in the coming year.  The next season is August when the trade shows will feature the hot products for the Christmas season.

Everybody would love to make lots of money quickly, working from home, and only doing a few hours of work per week. I’ve spent the past two years trying to find a great way of doing this. Only over the course of the past few months have I found any “get rich quick” programs worth buying. I’ve been trying to make money online for a long time. I had a few small websites, but they never made much more than a few hundred per month. It was easy money and didn’t require much work on my part, but I kne
